Rumor: E-cigarette use in adolescents is associated with future cigarette smoking.
Truth: This is true.
An e-cigarette is an electronic cigarette that simulates the feeling of tobacco smoking. The original intention of e-cigarettes was to encourage cigarette smokers to use a less harmful alternative or even to stop smoking cigarettes completely.
However, e-cigarettes have become a popular device for younger non-smoking individuals and may increase a person’s likelihood of smoking in the future.
A report published in the British Medical Journal by American researchers examines the negative effects of e-cigarettes.
They found that e-cigarette use in youth is associated with future cigarette smoking, whereas in older adults, e-cigarettes help to stop smoking.
